How to Choose Fence Materials and Supplies
When planning an aluminum, vinyl, chain link or wood fence installation, there are several factors to consider.
Cost: Obviously, the fence installation cost is an important factor to consider. Supplies and materials as well are something to factor into your budget. If you are wanting to stick to a smaller budget, consider cutting costs by gathering friends and family to do a “do it yourself” fence installation project over a weekend. Or go for cheaper fencing materials like chain link fencing or a vinyl privacy fence. If you would like the look of a craftsman style cedar wood fence, consider doing a ranch style split rail fence instead to cut down on fence supplies and installation cost.
Purpose: While cost plays a part, the purpose of your fence is also an important point to think about. Why? Because depending on what needs you would like a fence to fill, you may find yourself being willing to spend a bit more so that your fence can be as functional as possible. For instance, while a cheaper split wood fence may work as a driveway fence, it would not be an effective dog fence since the spaces are big enough to let any small animal out (or in, for that matter). So pet owners might want to steer towards a stockade or board on board wood fence. Or if it is only security you would like, a chain link or vinyl security fence could be a good option too. In terms of durability, cedar is some of the best wood (and material) for fences.
Aesthetic: Different fences have different looks and can lend a certain aesthetic to your home, business or property. A cedar wood picket or post and rail fence certainly has a more rustic feel than your more traditional white vinyl picket fence or privacy panels. While a chain link fence or gate is one of the cheaper fence materials, it may not look quite as nice as aluminum or wrought iron fencing.
